Typically referred to as "horse country," the town of Waxhaw dates back to the 1700s, but it wasn't until 1888 that the railroad, laying tracks to Atlanta, brought prosperity. Tracks still run through the center of town along the green, grassy strip dividing two rows of stores. The community was once dependent on cotton, but in the early 1960s, Waxhaw reshaped itself as an antique and equestrian community. The town currently has dozens of specialty shops and dining ranging from mom-and-pop restaurants to fine-dining bistros. One major draw to the area is the annual Queens Cup Steeplechase at Brooklandwood Farms and Cane Creek Park, a 1,050-acre park that draws visitors with its 350-acre bass trophy lake, and public beach with swimming and walking trails. Waxhaw is located in Union County and is in the Union County School District. Waxhaw homes range in style, but you will notice a distinct "horse country feel" to the area. Grand, new Waxhaw homes reflect mainly transitional styles with stone, brick, and Tudor accents mixed with colonial, English, and French country styles.
